How to make a BRB (be right back) scene in OBS
A break scene avoids an empty screen, or the game going on without you. The end-of-stream scene is built the same way.
- 01
Create the break scene
In the Scenes panel, click the plus and name it “BRB”. Add a background (image, looping video or browser page) and a “Be right back” text.
- 02
Cut your mic on this scene
The mute button in the mixer cuts the mic everywhere. To cut it only during the break: in the settings, Audio tab, set “Mic/Auxiliary Audio” to Disabled, then add an “Audio Input Capture” source in every scene where you should be heard (use “Add existing” to reuse the same one). The break scene does not contain one.
- 03
Assign a keyboard shortcut
In the settings, Hotkeys tab, each scene has a “Switch to scene” line to switch to it. Give one key to the break and another to your game scene. You can also give a key to mute and unmute the mic.
- 04
Create the end-of-stream scene
A new “End” scene: a background, a thank you, your next stream and your socials. As with the break, it does not contain your mic.
- 05
End the stream cleanly
Switch to the end scene, leave it on screen for a few seconds, then stop the stream.
- 06
Test before going live
Start a test recording, switch between scenes with your shortcuts and listen back: you should no longer be heard during the break.
